a5c7b9f00b Alain Chanier is a dapper businessman from Marseilles, France, who is in reality a drug lord working on a big score - to sell $32 million worth of 89% pure heroin to New York City. But his potential buyer - small-time hood Salvatore Boca - is being tailed by two undercover NYC cops, James "Popeye" Doyle and Buddy "Cloudy" Russo. The more Popeye and Cloudy dig, the closer they get - to where Chanier agrees to an attempt on Popeye's life that results in a brutal train hijacking and automobile pursuit, and eventually to a showdown between police and mobsters outside the city.
Popeye Doyle and Buddy Russo get wind of a big shipment of heroin and begin a tail of the suspects, and their French Connection, two French nationals who are the european link. As money troubles begin for the hoods they decide to kill Popeye and Buddy to give them enough room to bring in the heroin. A combination of police procedural and action/car chase.
A movie that's most remembered for a complex and dazzling car chase scene through the streets of New York City, "The French Connection" wowed audiences and critics at the time and set the mold for the gritty police crime drama that still exists today in our movie theatres and on our television screens. The jittery, documentary-style cinematography and the grungy production design are the elements still aped today by T.V. shows that want to consider themselves to be "realistic." But the film is really nothing more than an exciting popcorn film; there would be nothing wrong with that if cinephiles hadn't exalted it beyond its rightful place in film history and led many modern-day viewers coming to it for the first time to expect something extraordinary.<br/><br/>Also notable for making a star out of Gene Hackman, who indeed is one of the film's biggest assets in the role of Popeye Doyle, tough-guy detective who's almostbadthe bad guys he's out to protect the public from. But Roy Scheider, in the supporting role of Popeye's sidekick, is equally deserving of praise.<br/><br/>"The Departed" owes much to "The French Connection,"its screenplay explores the same kind of corruption that blurs the boundaries between upholding the law and breaking it. In Scorsese's film,in "The French Connection," you don't know whether it's better to be on the side of the law or opposed to it; both positions seem equally scary.<br/><br/>Grade: B+
I was going into this film expecting a perfect action thriller because of the critical acclaim and accolades. I can't say I didn't like the film because it was really good in my point of view, but not perfect. The action is filmed very well and it's pacing is spot on. But in the first 15 minutes I paused the movie and looked up on Wikipedia what was going on. That isn't really a HUGE problem but I don't enjoy having to do that. The performances made by Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider feel real and they make you want them to win. There is only one more issue that I really didn't like was the ending. When the movie ends you will be asking yourself "What else?" There is a certain conflict that doesn't get resolved which really bugged me. But I guess I can't complain because that's how the real story went. All things about this movie is great except those two points I made.
Producer and screenwriter have added enough fictional flesh to provide director William Friedkin and his overall topnotch cast with plenty of material, and they make the most of it.
The word "frog" is often useda derogatory term for someone of French descent. When Popeye refers to Charnier"Frog One," he's trying to distinguish Charnier from his partner, Pierre Nicoli. It can also be a way to show Popeye's generally bigoted attitude. He's deliberately trying to confuse Willy into making a confession. Poughkeepsie is a small city about 80 miles north of New York on the Hudson River. Willy may have a drug connection up there that buys product from him and sells it in that region. His line, which is somewhere along the lines of "when was the last time you picked your feet in Poughkeepsie" is basically nonsense. Repeating it and variations of it including only Poughkeepsie or just when the person has last "picked their feet", over and over in a threatening manner, is a tactic meant to bewilder the subject. While the criminal is desperately trying to figure out what this sentence is a code for, the interrogators intersperse the badgering with actual questions like "who's your connection Willie, what's his name!?" and "is it Joe the barber?" The totally confused criminal up against the wall, doesn't know what this Poughkeepsie thing is, but it sounds bad and he sure didn't do it. So to take the questioning away from this mysterious act the police think he's performed, that must be pretty terrible, Willie admits to what they really want to know out of fear. This tactic/phrase was actually developed by the character that Gene Hackman played, in real life (the movie is loosely based on a true story). Source: French Connection Commentary extra found in the DVD version of the movie. They more than likely bought Devereaux a new car exactly like the old one. Putting the car back together after spending several hours tearing it apart would have taken at least twicelong, plus there was the actual damage they caused to the interior while ripping out upholstery, carpeting & other trim. From there it'd be a simple matter of buying a new Lincoln, pulling out the rocker panels in that one & stashing the heroin & transferring the license plates to it.
